Pete came on the job in 1998, assigned to 014. He was activated and sent to Iraq in May 2009 and in June He was severly injured when a helicopter crashed into a building he was in. When he arrived at the VA in Tampa he was classified a paraplegic, but he is undergoing extensive physical therapy 6 days a week, and as of this past week end he is able to walk slowly with the help of a cane. He has a great attitude and told me some day his wheelchair will be in the corner collecting dust. If any of the guys are in the area he would love company. He is in therapy until 3:30 pm-Friday and 1:30 on Saturday...Tom Faragoi

Mayor Richard Daley and some aldermen suggested today that police officers and firefighters take off nearly five weeks without pay to cut city spending next year.

The idea, which the city cannot force on the police and fire unions, surfaced as outside critics and aldermen are questioning Daley’s plan to dip into long-term cash reserves to help pay for his proposed $6.1 billion budget.

“Everyone has to be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” Daley said today when asked if police officers and firefighters should take unpaid furlough days. “And that’s why I’m taking 24 days without pay, and I got other people to take that, because you have to show that government understands the suffering that is going on throughout your communities.”
Daley already has ordered non-union employees to take 12 unpaid furlough days and 12 unpaid holidays, and most unions agreed to do the same. Those measures will save the city $70 million next year.

But police and firefighters, who make up the bulk of the city work force, weren’t asked to take the days off. Both of those unions’ contracts have expired, and the police contract is in binding arbitration, with a decision expected by spring at the earliest. Any concessions are only likely to come after that's settled, if they come at all.

If police and fire unions agreed to furloughs, the city would save $120 million, city Budget Director Eugene Munin said in response to a question from Ald. Anthony Beale, 9th, at a City Council budget hearing today.

“That’s 120 million we could save the taxpayers of the City of Chicago if we had cooperation from just two of the outstanding four unions,” Beale responded.

Several aldermen questioned Daley’s plan to spend $270 million from a long-term reserve account established just last year from proceeds of the city’s 75-year parking meter system lease.

“We don’t have a plan to replenish that fund,” said Ald. Scott Waguespack, 32nd, a consistent critic of the lease. “That’s my concern.”

Aldermen floated a number of ideas, including a city casino or dipping into special tax district funds, to pay for city spending. Last week, Daley noted the many complications in getting a casino off the ground, and he has repeatedly dismissed dipping into tax-increment-finance district funds.
Ald. Ray Suarez, 31st, asked why police officers and firefighters aren’t taking the same pay cuts as others.

"Why can’t everybody take part in bringing the expenses down so that we don’t have to force a lot of these folks to take furlough days?" Suarez asked. "Because I think it’s a little unfair to ask a single provider from a family who’s making forty-five or fifty thousand dollars to give back not just 12 furlough days, but the 12 holidays. Why can’t this be done? What’s the problem?"

Munin responded, "I agree with you, alderman, I think everyone should share in that."

Officials with the city's police and fire unions could not be reached today.

Aldermen hired relatives, friends and campaign workers, leased automobiles and rented downtown parking spaces with money from their taxpayer-funded expense accounts, according to city databases and public records compiled by the Tribune.

The aldermen's expense allowance more than doubled in 2008 to $73,280 each from $33,280. Half of the city's 50 aldermen spent more than $70,000 of last year’s allowance. The municipal code of the City of Chicago defines appropriate uses for the allowance but allows broad discretion by the City Council members. Oversight is minimal. Aldermen are merely told to ensure that their spending is legal.

Aldermen spent $132,788 on automobile leases, $28,186 on downtown parking spots and $11,277 on bottled water. The city last year allocated up to $3.7 million for expenses; aldermen spent $3.1 million.

Third man charged in police killing ordered held

A third Chicago man was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer in June, police said today.

Christopher Harris, 20 of the 6200 block of South Paulina Street, was charged Friday with first-degree murder. He was ordered held without bail today by Circuit Court Judge Peggy Chiampas.

Harris was taken into custody Friday after a witness identified him as a third person involved in the June 1 shooting of Chicago Police Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez.

Kevin Walker, 21, of the 2500 block of West 70th Street, and Shawn Gaston, 20, of the 6200 block of South Paulina Street, have each pleaded not guilty to murder charges. Last month the officer was honored posthumously in a city council resolution.

Assistant Cook County State's Atty. John Dillon said in court today that Harris fired one of the shots that struck Valadez. Dillon said Harris was riding in the back seat of the car with the two other men charged in the killing. Harris allegedly fired a .357-caliber handgun that was one of the three guns later found in the car allegedly used.

Harris' hand tested positive for evidence of gunshot residue shortly after the shooting, Dillon said, indicating Harris had recently fired a weapon. Dillon declined to comment on why there was a delay of more than two months between that positive test and Harris being charged.

Harris admitted he agreed to return to the area where he, Walker and Gaston had been fired at, according to Dillon. He also admitted to firing shots from the back seat of the car, Dillon said. Previously, police said Gaston was the shooter and Walker was the driver.

Harris' criminal background consists of two misdemeanor drug cases. He is scheduled to return to court at noon Monday for a preliminary hearing on the murder charge. His public defender said Harris was a Harper High School graduate currently attending Kennedy-King College.

Valadez, a plainclothes Chicago police officer, died on June 1 at about 2:40 p.m. after being shot in the head and critically wounded early that morning in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

Walker, Gaston and Harris had earlier been shot at by people they believed to be rival gang members near the corner of West 60th Street and South Hermitage Avenue, police said. The men then went to another location, picked up guns and returned to the scene to retaliate, police said.

Valadez and his partner had responded to reports of the initial gunfire and were in the 6000 block of South Hermitage Avenue talking to a citizen when Gaston opened fire from a car driven by Walker, according to police. Valadez was in plainclothes at the time, but was wearing a bulletproof vest and a police star.

Valadez was the third officer killed in the line of duty in the past year.

MILWAUKEE — A woman accused of helping lure a boyfriend to a hotel room and gluing his penis to his stomach as punishment for his cheating ways says she and the other women went to the motel to tell him “the gig was up.”

Therese Ziemann told NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday that she and the other three women accused of holding the man against his will in a Green Bay, Wis., hotel room did not collaborate, and that there was no ringleader among them.

Prosecutors say the women, including the man’s wife and another girlfriend, lured the man to the motel on July 30 to punish him for cheating.

Court documents say the man agreed to be bound with sheets and blindfolded by Ziemann, and that she used Krazy Glue to attach his penis to his stomach.

Tens of thousands with chronic back pain will be forced to live in agony after a decision to slash the number of painkilling injections issued on the NHS, doctors have warned.

The Government's drug rationing watchdog says "therapeutic" injections of steroids, such as cortisone, which are used to reduce inflammation, should no longer be offered to patients suffering from persistent lower back pain when the cause is not known.

Instead the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is ordering doctors to offer patients remedies like acupuncture and osteopathy.

The NHS currently issues more than 60,000 treatments of steroid injections every year. NICE said in its guidance it wants to cut this to just 3,000 treatments a year, a move which would save the NHS £33 million.

But the British Pain Society, which represents specialists in the field, has written to NICE calling for the guidelines to be withdrawn after its members warned that they would lead to many patients having to undergo unnecessary and high-risk spinal surgery.

Dr Christopher Wells, a leading specialist in pain relief medicine and the founder of the NHS' first specialist pain clinic, said it was "entirely unacceptable" that conventional treatments used by thousands of patients would be stopped.

"I don't mind whether some people want to try acupuncture, or osteopathy. What concerns me is that to pay for these treatments, specialist clinics which offer vital services are going to be forced to close, leaving patients in significant pain, with nowhere to go,"

The NICE guidelines admit that evidence was limited for many back pain treatments, including those it recommended. Where scientific proof was lacking, advice was instead taken from its expert group. But specialists are furious that while the group included practitioners of alternative therapies, there was no one with expertise in conventional pain relief medicine to argue against a decision to significantly restrict its use.

Dr Jonathan Richardson, a consultant pain specialist from Bradford Hospitals Trust, is among more than 50 medics who have written to NICE urging the body to reconsider its decision, which was taken in May.

He said: "The consequences of the NICE decision will be devastating for thousands of patients. It will mean more people on opiates, which are addictive, and kill 2,000 a year. It will mean more people having spinal surgery, which is incredibly risky, and has a 50 per cent failure rate."

One in three people are estimated to suffer from lower back pain every year, while one in 15 consult their GP about it. Specialists say therapeutic injections using steroids to reduce inflammation and other injections which can deaden nerve endings, can provide months or even years of respite from pain.

Experts said that if funding was stopped for the injections, many clinics would also struggle to offer other vital services, such as pain management programmes and psychotherapy which is used to manage chronic pain.

Anger among medics has reached such levels that Dr Paul Watson, a physiotherapist who helped draft the guidelines, was last week forced to resign as President of the British Pain Society.

Doctors said he had failed to represent their views when the guidelines were drawn up and refused to support the letter by more than 50 of the group's members which called for the guidelines to be withdrawn.

In response, NICE chairman Professor Sir Michael Rawlins expressed outrage over the vote that forced Dr Watson from his position, describing the actions of the society as "shameful". He accused pain specialists of refusing to accept that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support their practices.

A spokesman for NICE said its guidance did not recommend that injections were stopped for all patients, but only for those who had been in pain for less than a year, where the cause was not known.

Iris Watkins, 80 from Appleton, in Cheshire said her life had been "transformed" by the use of therapeutic injections every two years. The pensioner began to suffer back pain in her 70s. Four years ago, despite physiotherapy treatment and the use of medication, she had reached a stage where she could barely walk.

"It was horrendous, I was spending hours lying on the sofa, or in bed, I couldn't spend a whole evening out. I was referred to a specialist, who decided to give me a set of injections. The difference was tremendous",

Within days, she was able to return to her old life, gardening, caring for her husband Herbert, and enjoying social occasions.

"I just felt fabulous – almost immediately, there was not a twinge. I only had an injection every two years, but it really has transformed my life; if I couldn't have them I would be in despair".

McDonald's markets its food to children by packaging it in brightly colored boxes with enclosed toys, but most kids would probably lose their lunch if they knew about the animal suffering that goes into the company's "Happy Meals." That's why PETA created Unhappy Meals to make sure that families know that the lives of the chickens who were killed for those McNuggets were anything but happy.

PETA's spoof of a McDonald's chicken sandwich box features the image of a knife-wielding "Ronald McDonald," along with pictures of birds who have been mutilated and scalded alive and information about controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK), the less cruel method of slaughter that PETA is asking McDonald's to adopt.

The inside of the Unhappy Meal box is stained with "blood" and contains a "blood"-filled packet urging McDonald's to "Ketchup With the Times," a paper cutout of a menacing Ronald McDonald with PETA's parody "I'm Hatin' It" logo, a "bloody" plastic chicken, and a "Chicken McCruelty" T-shirt wrapped up like a sandwich.

Opponents of health insurance reform may find the truth a little inconvenient, but as our second president famously said, "facts are stubborn things."

Scary chain emails and videos are starting to percolate on the internet, breathlessly claiming, for example, to "uncover" the truth about the President’s health insurance reform positions.

In this video, Linda Douglass, the communications director for the White House’s Health Reform Office, addresses one example that makes it look like the President intends to "eliminate" private coverage, when the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

For the record, the President has consistently said that if you like your insurance plan, your doctor, or both, you will be able to keep them. He has even proposed eight consumer protections relating specifically to the health insurance industry.

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. Jackson . As we all know, Jackson died the other day. He was an
entertainer who performed for decades. He made millions, he spent
millions, and he did a lot of things that make him a villian to many
people. I understand that his death would affect a lot of people, and
I respect those people who mourn his death, but that isn't the point
of my rant.

Why is it that when ONE man dies, the whole of America loses their
minds with grief. When a man dies whose only contribution to the
country was to ENTERTAIN people, the Amercian people find the need to
flock to a memorial in Hollywood , and even Congress sees the need to
hold a "moment of silence" for his passing?

Am I missing something here? ONE man dies, and a ll of a sudden he's a
freaking martyr because he entertained us for a few decades? What
about all those SOLDIERS who have died to give us freedom? All those
Soldiers who, knowing that they would be asked to fight in a war,
still raised their hands and swore to defend the Constitution and the
United States of America . Where is their moment of silence? Where
are the people flocking to their graves or memorials and mourning over
them because they made the ultimate sacrifice? Why is it when a
Soldier dies, there are more people saying "good riddence," and "thank
God for IEDs?" When did this country become so calloused to the
sacrifice of GOOD MEN and WOMEN, that they can arbitrarily blow off
their deaths, and instead, throw themselves into mourning for a "Pop
Icon?"

I think that if they are going to hold a moment of silence IN CONGRESS
for Michael Jackson, they need to hold a moment of silence for every
service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan . They need to PUBLICLY
recognize every life that has been lost so that the American people
can live their callous little lives in the luxury and freedom that WE,
those that are living and those that have gone on, have provided for
them. But, wait, that would take too much time, because there have
been so many willing to make that sacrifice. After all, we will never
make millions of dollars. We will never star in movies, or write hit
songs that the world will listen t oo. We only shed our blood, sweat
and tears so that people can enjoy what they have.

Sorry if I have offended, but I needed to say it.

Well it was nice to get away for a leat a day and enjoy myself at Summer fest in Milwaukee on the 4th . So we are staying in a nice hotel called the pfister built in 1893 has a lot charm and elegance and who walks in but Huey Lewis . I am not impressed by famous people rock stars or movie but my friend really wanted a picture .
Huey comes out of the suit elevator and is in the lobby and my friend says "hey Huey " He couldn't be more uninterested his only word to my friends were YEAH they could take a picture . Now no one in the hotel recognized him we were the only ones asking for a picture he was bothered ,a washed up do wop 80's singer playing Summerfest was bothered by a few fans .

Can someone tell me why Summerfest didn't have fireworks on the 4th ?

U.S Solider Captured In Afganistan

Insurgents have captured an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan after he walked off post with his three Afghan counterparts, officials said Thursday.

Spokeswoman Capt. Elizabeth Mathias said the soldier disappeared Tuesday. The U.S. military is offering a $25,000 reward to any Afghan national for information about the soldier's whereabouts.

"We have all available resources out there looking for him and hopefully providing for his safe return," Mathias said.

There are indications that the soldier who was captured was "disaffected" and that he left the base to meet up with several Afghan nationals who were members of the security forces that he had been working with to train, one U.S. defense official tells FOX News.

"He was not of sound mind when he did what he did. Not smart," the official said.

The soldier was handed over to the Haqqani network, a group with ties to the Taliban, and the same group that captured New York Times correspondent David Rhode.

U.S. officials believe the soldier is still being held in Afghanistan - and has not crossed into Pakistan's Waziristan province.

Maulvi Sangin, who claims to speak for the Taliban in the province, said that the U.S. soldier was seized when he and the others were on their way to the Yousafkhel security checkpost, and took them to a secret location, according to an Afghan news Web site obtained by MEMRI, The Middle East Media Research Institute. Sangin claimed the abducted soldiers were drunk when captured by the Taliban.

U.S. officials could not confirm that these claims are true, and not Taliban propaganda.

The news broke as thousands of U.S. Marines launched a major anti-Taliban offensive in southern Afghanistan. The missing soldier was not part of that operation.

"We are not providing further details to protect the soldier's well-being," she said.

Phil Cline gave a nice speech about the importance of The Chicago Police Memorial Fund which the proceeds were donated too.

The Chicago Police Department has been charged with the task of keeping the peace. But many officers on the Force have a warped perception of what this responsibility truly entails.

The CPD has made this clear on several occasions, none more memorable than the crack-down at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which was classified by the Walker Report as a “police riot.” But, instead of learning from the tragedies that accompanied the demonstration, the police have chosen to celebrate this cycle of violence.

We demand the Office of the Mayor publicly condemn this event, both out of respect for the lives that were ruthlessly stolen by the CPD during this contemptuous time and to ensure the safety of Chicago’s residents.

Chicago is currently bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. But how can a police department that believes brute force is an acceptable and effective form of crowd control manage the revelry and disorder around an international athletic event?

Ultimately, it can’t. We saw this at the DNC and at the anti-war march on March 20, 2003. In both cases, the officers charged with keeping the peace were actually the purveyors of violence.

This is not surprising, given the mantras they preach. To this day, they portray the brutal events of 1968 and 1969 as a heroic “stand against anarchy” in the name of “public order.” They create a militaristic dichotomy between “Marxist street thugs” and “a thin blue line of dedicated, tough Chicago police officers.”*

This mentality must change. To mend Chicago’s dismal reputation, we urge you to make an official statement condemning this reunion and the abuse of police power.

Cash For Clunkers You Get From the Goverment $4,500

Car shoppers looking to get rid of gas-guzzling old vehicles could get up to $4,500 in government vouchers to help them buy more fuel-efficient vehicles under "cash for clunkers" legislation President Obama is expected to soon sign.

The bill, which has miles-per-gallon requirements and other rules, was approved by the Senate Thursday, after earlier winning passage in the House. It provides $1 billion for the program from July through November.

Here is how the program works:

• • Car owners get a voucher worth $3,500 if they trade in a vehicle getting 18 miles per gallon or less for one getting at last 22 mpg. The voucher grows to $4,500 if the new car's mileage is at least 10 mpg higher than the old vehicle.

• • Owners of sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks or mini vans getting 18 mpg or less get a voucher for $3,500 if their new truck or SUV gets at least 2 mpg higher than their old vehicle. The voucher would increase to $4,500 if the mileage is at least 5 mpg higher.

• • Eligible vehicles must be manufactured in model year 1984 or later and must be insured, registered in the car buyer's name and in use for at least one year.

• • Car shoppers don't actually get cash for their clunkers. The voucher will be applied to the price along with any other incentives.

• • Dealers will be required to send old vehicles to a disposal facility.

• • The program is expected to be implemented by early August and to be available through November.

• • The program will be available to dealers certified to participate in the program.

1968: A Convention in Crisis
As the 1968 Democratic National Convention approached, events throughout the nation combined to create a tense atmosphere in Chicago. Rising sentiment against the war in Vietnam, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and the failure of the Democratic Party to apply its civil rights policy had an effect both inside and outside of the International Amphitheatre, where the convention delegates gathered.
Officer Mike Schumacher lives in an eighteenth floor apartment overlooking Grant Park. From his balcony, you can see the Conrad Hilton Hotel where convention delegates and presidential candidates stayed during the '68 convention.

SCHUMACHER: It's the larger building. You can see almost like it looks like an 'H' in the center for Hilton.

There are reminders of '68 inside his apartment as well.

Pig is of course the name that hippies and others shouted at cops in the late sixties. Schumacher heard that and worse when he was trying to keep protestors away from the many dignitaries staying at the Conrad Hilton. Last Friday we walked the area around the hotel on South Michigan Ave. We went across the street to Grant Park and Schumacher smiled as he climbed up a berm that must be at least 30 feet high.

SCHUMACHER: Now you're walking in a place of great history here.

At the top of the berm is a two-story tall statue of a man on a horse.

SCHUMACHER: This was covered with guys up above and hanging from up there. One of the places that they liked to take their picture, Abbie Hoffman and all the rest of them was right here. These trees were shorter back forty years ago and Hilton used to have a sign right on the side of it "Conrad Hilton" and so this was their elevated view and you can see to this day it's a great podium.

Schumacher says thousands of protestors filled the park around the raised statue. And he remembers being a block north at the corner of Balbo and Michigan hauling people off to the lock-up.

SCHUMACHER: They were blocking traffic, laying down in the street, you know walking across the street, jaywalking.

But they weren't all so peaceful.

SCHUMACHER: I actually saw one police officer whose riot helmet was crushed by a large rock. I took him into the police station myself. If he didn't have a riot helmet on at the time it would have crushed his skull and killed him. Armed with batons, police fought back hitting not only protestors, but bystanders and journalists as well.

Images of the clashes were broadcast around the world and Mayor Daley was condemned and the incidents were referred to as police riots. To defend itself, the city of Chicago produced an hour-long broadcast that aired a few weeks after the convention. In it, a police commander who was actually Schumacher's boss at the time, shows the television audience weapons taken from protestors.

SOT: There are things on this table for instance, the broken slats from the benches in the park where weapons were picked up on the moment and used. Broken bottles, broken glass bent knives, pieces of brick, many projectiles.

Other favorite projectiles were bags of feces and cans filled with urine. Schumacher says though there were some instances of unnecessary police force, he says the cops did a good job under chaotic circumstances.

SCHUMACHER: There's a lot of adrenaline that gets moving. There's a lot of anger that takes place and quite often, if you've just been slapped in the face with a bag of sh*t it's really hard to say to that policeman whose now got the guy that did it, handcuff him officer and very calmly don't say anything or do anything.

Schumacher says that doesn't excuse bad police behavior and he doesn't condone it, but he says it does put police excesses into context. In the end, Schumacher says protestors wanted a confrontation with police and would have escalated the violence until they got it. He points out that despite the abuses hurled at officers, they never drew their guns and no protestors were killed that week. And he thinks the strong police response also sent the message to protestors around the country that if they come to Chicago looking for trouble, they'll find it.

(Months before the convention, political activists planned demonstrations in Chicago to share the spotlight with the Democratic political leaders. Some groups, such as the Yippies, came to Chicago determined to challenge traditional political process and authority. Tensions increased and turned into violence when police refused to allow these groups near the main hotels and the conventional hall.

Update On Milwaukee Police Officers

One of the two Milwaukee police officers shot during a confrontation with a man in Walker's Point on Tuesday has been released from the hospital.

Officer Bryan Norberg, 21, left Froedtert Hospital on Thursday night and can expect a visit soon from Chief Edward Flynn, who will award him with a Medal of Valor.

Officer Graham Kunisch, who records indicate lost an eye in the attack, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Flynn pinned a Medal of Valor to Kunisch's hospital pillow on Thursday.

Both officers were shot multiple times Tuesday afternoon on the sidewalk in front of a tavern in the 800 block of S. 2nd St. after they stopped a man on a bicycle.

Teen charged with shooting, wounding 2 Wis. cops (June 11th, 2009 @ 4:23pm) Policy MILWAUKEE (AP) - A Milwaukee teen accused of shooting and wounding two police officers this week has been charged with two counts of attempted homicide.

Milwaukee County district attorney John Chisholm said Thursday the charges against 18-year-old Julius Burton carry a maximum penalty of 60 years in prison.

Police say two officers approached Burton on Tuesday because he looked suspicious and he began firing without provocation.

Police Chief Edward Flynn says the more seriously injured officer remains in critical condition.

Online court records show Burton has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination before his next scheduled court appearance on June 26.

In a racially charged interview, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright said that President Obama hasn't spoken to him since they parted ways last year, because "them Jews aren't going to let him talk to me."

He suggested White House advisers were keeping the two separate.

"Them Jews aren't going to let him talk to me. I told my baby daughter, that he'll talk to me in five years when he's a lame duck, or in eight years when he's out of office," Wright said, according to Virginia's Daily Press. "They will not let him ... talk to somebody who calls a spade what it is."

Obama left Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago last year following the very public controversy over his inflammatory sermons.

Wright sporadically has granted media interviews and made public appearances since. In the Daily Press article, he also claimed that the president did not send a delegation to the recent world racism conference in Geneva for fear of offending Jews.

"Ethnic cleansing is going on in Gaza. Ethnic cleansing of the Zionist is a sin and a crime against humanity, and they don't want Barack talking like that because that's anti-Israel," Wright said.

Wright said he voted for Obama in November and has no regrets over their severed relationship.

"Regret for what ... that the media went back five, seven, 10 years and spent $4,000 buying 20 years worth of sermons to hear what I've been preaching for 20 years?" he said.

The men are being held as "persons of interest" in the shooting, with police saying that they were occupants of a blue 2007 Pontiac G6 -- a four-door sedan -- that was positively identified as being the vehicle used in the shooting of Chicago police Officer Alejandro Valadez, according to a police report.

The men remained in custody early Tuesday, but no charges have been filed.

Valadez and his partner were responding to a call of gunfire about 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 6000 block of South Hermitage, when someone inside a vehicle fired gunshots at the officer.

Valadez was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County on Monday afternoon, several hours after being critically wounded by a gunshot to the head.

Valadez joined the Chicago Police Department in December 2005 and was most recently assigned to the Englewood (7th) District. He had earned a Department Commendation and 22 Honorable Mentions during his three-year career, according to a release from police.

Valadez is from a "police family," with his brother, sister and fiancée also on the police force. He and his fiancée were expecting a baby boy in September.

He is the third officer killed in the line of duty in the past 12 months, according to Chicago Breaking News.

Officer Nathaniel Taylor, 39, a 14-year veteran, was shot and killed in September while trying to execute a search warrant against a suspected narcotics dealer. Officer Richard Francis, 60, was fatally shot in July during a struggle with a woman causing a disruption on a bus.

A plain-clothes Chicago police officer was shot in the head and critically wounded early this morning in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

The attack occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of South Hermitage Avenue as the 27-year-old three-year veteran officer and his partner were investigating a report of shots fired, said Police Supt. Jody Weis at a news conference in the lobby of police headquarters.

The shots were fired from a vehicle with more than one person in it, Weis said. He refused to discuss that vehicle.

Other police sources said investigators were "zeroing in" on suspects and hoped to announce arrests soon. Weis (right) would only say: "There are some very good investigative leads right now."

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating the case, he said.

The identity of the wounded officer was not being released pending notification of relatives, Weis said, but he added the officer works in the 7th District. In addition to the officer's head wound, he was wounded in the leg, Weis said.

"We have him in our prayers," Weis said. "We'll have to wait and see how this progresses."

The officer was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Police backup and an ambulance were called to the scene.

Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene. Officers continued to search the area for evidence as late as 3 a.m.

Several teams were stationed along Hermitage between 62nd and 60th Streets, including near the field at the southeast corner of Charles W. Earle Elementary School and in an alley in the 6000 block between Hermitage and Wood Street.

(May 29) -- A plainclothes policeman who drew his gun while chasing someone he had found rummaging through his car was shot and killed by a fellow officer who was driving by and saw the pursuit, the police commissioner said.
Commissioner Raymond Kelly said 25-year-old Omar J. Edwards died after being shot late Thursday within blocks of the Harlem police station where he worked.

The shooter was white and Edwards was black, a fact that could raise questions about police use of deadly force in a minority community. And in recent years there have been several cases of off-duty policemen in the New York City area being shot and killed by other officers.
Edwards had just finished his shift around 10:30 p.m. when he headed to his car and saw that the driver's-side window had been smashed and a man was going through the vehicle, Kelly said.
Edwards struggled with the man, who got away from him by slipping out of his sweater, Kelly said. Edwards chased the man up two streets with his gun drawn, he said.
A sergeant and two plainclothes officers in an unmarked police car saw the pursuit and made a U-turn to follow the men, Kelly said. One of the officers jumped out of the car and fired six times, hitting Edwards twice — once in the arm and once in the chest, he said.

A police officer was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on the South Side at midday, authorities said. Four other people also were hurt.

A source said that police were trying to find the officer's weapon. As of 1:48 p.m., about two hours after the accident, the gun had not been located.

The officer was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Hospital Medical Center in Oak Lawn from the crash at 98th and Halsted Streets, said Quention Curtis, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

An older man and woman also were taken to Christ Hospital, and two teenagers were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash, which involved three cars, happened about 11:45 a.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

The time has come that the Chicago Police be honored and recognized for their contributions to maintaining order and for taking a stand against anarchy.

The time was the hot summer month of August '68. The Democratic National Convention was about to start and the only thing that stood between Marxist street thugs and public order was a thin blue line of dedicated, tough Chicago police officers.

For decades the collective Left has white-washed what really happened during the riots of 1968 and 1969. Chicago Police officers who participated in the riots continue to endure unending criticism - all of which is unwarranted, inaccurate and wrong.

The reunion is coming!

Obama Didn't Speak At The National Peace Officers Memorial

Sir,
While it's tradition for the World Series Champions to visit the White House each year there is also another tradition that happens in Washington, DC every May 15th. It is known as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and was signed into law on October 1, 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. That is the day that a ceremony is held at the United States Capitol to honor all law enforcement officers who made the Supreme Sacrifice the previous year. Historically, the President of the United States is the keynote speaker and welcomes the survivors as each officer's name is announced and the family places a flower in the FOP wreath in honor of their loved one.

The husbands, wives and children of the 134 officers killed last year in the Line of Duty were not the only family members who came to the ceremony. Their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers also came to the Capitol to honor their hero. Also, the officers that served with them were in attendance. So there they were, almost 1,000 police survivors from every corner of the country, seated on the West Lawn of the Capitol waiting to be welcomed by the President only to find that he was unable to attend due to a photo opportunity and a 10 minute speech to a baseball team.

It's not the Phillies fault that the President of the United States was busy welcoming them to the Rose Garden, they deserved that, but if it was known that the Law Enforcement Memorial Service was scheduled for noon on May 15th I'm sure an adjustment would have been made to accommodate both.

My question is how do you tell a child whose parent was killed protecting his community, that the President would not be coming to honor his mom or dad because even though he was just down the street he was too busy taking a picture with a baseball team. The City of Philadelphia, the Delaware Valley and our country has seen way too many officers killed in the Line of Duty. FYI...there are 18,661 names on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, and one horrible fact remains. Every 53 hours a Police Officer is killed in the Line of Duty.

At every funeral you see the outpouring of grief and sympathy from our citizens. There are fund raisers at Geno's, Finnegan's Wake, the FOP and numerous establishments around the city to support the officer's family. We as Police Officers cannot thank the citizens enough for their kindness, generosity and support, but the men and women who were in DC for Police Week are reeling from the President's decision not to pay his respects by attending the memorial service but instead chose to welcome a baseball team to the Rose Garden. There is no comparison. There is no excuse. There is no justification. I don't understand his reasoning....go pay my respects to 134 Police Officers killed in the Line of Duty or take a picture with a baseball team.
THIS IS NOTHING BUT AN INSULT!!!

I became a Police Officer in 1974 and retired in 2001 and in those 35 years I may have missed 4 or 5 funerals but I've yet to miss the Memorial Service in DC. His disregard of the 134 Fallen Officers, their families and departments is beyond comprehension. IT IS A DISGRACE!!!

'I have never heard of any City Council member ...'

Tonight is the anniversary of the deadliest event in Chicago Police Department history. On the evening of May 4, 1886, as a drizzle fell on the city's near West side, a labor rally was held in support of something we take for granted: the 8-hour work day.

There was a large, boisterous crowd listening to a number of speakers. But it was so peaceful that even Mayor Carter Harrison Sr. listened for a time.

As the last speaker was reciting his final words about 10:30 p.m., someone threw a pipe bomb at the column of Chicago police officers.

The police opened fire and some of the protesters pulled guns of their own and shot back. After the 5-minute melee, dozens of people lay slaughtered on the street.

Among the dead were seven Chicago police officers. An eighth policeman died later from his injuries.

Some called it a massacre.

It is usually known as the Haymarket Riot.

In polite circles, it is called the Haymarket Affair.

By whatever name, this anniversary of that terrible Chicago event on this date 123 years ago is an opportunity to think about the thousands of people who have served and protected all of us; especially those who have been wounded and killed in the line of duty.

But it is difficult not to be disillusioned about law enforcement these days.

Just this year a Southsider was sentenced for secretly working as a Chicago mobster while he was also on the police force - providing crucial information to the Outfit about an underworld homicide.

Last month, an 18-year Chicago detective was charged in a drunken car crash on the Dan Ryan that killed two innocent victims.

Last week, the son of a disgraced, corrupt Chicago cop was convicted of leaking sensitive information to the mob while working as a deputy United States Marshal.

Also last week, three Chicago cops were cleared in the infamous Jefferson Tap and Grille bar fracas - but not before the department name was sullied by repeated airing of video showing one of the off-duty cops with his hands on the neck of a patron.

There seems to have been a steady stream of embarrassing, unacceptable events involving some of Chicago's "finest."

And if you concentrate just on those, it is easy to avoid being thankful for good cops. But there are more of them, many more, than there are bad ones.

Day after day in this city, the unsung, hardworking majority are trampled by a knucklehead minority that can't stay straight.

I was reminded of this recently, loud and clear, after reporting a story on ABC 7 about a sensitive contract issue raised by a South side alderman. Ald. Anthony Beale was suggesting that police and fire officers forgo $5,000 in what he termed "bonuses," that they receive every year in addition to their regular salaries.

The contractual payments are intended to cover a "uniform allowance" and for what is called "duty availability," which is basically a fee to ensure that officers are reachable for work 24/7.

As I have learned over the years, reports even mildly challenging of police - especially pay or benefits - are met by a voracious response. This was no different.

But one response touched me. That it came from a retired city fire lieutenant shows the symbiosis between cops and firefighters.

His name is Jim McMahon and he wrote to me for one reason. The "18,000 men and woman of the Chicago Police and Fire Departments have been working without a raise or a current contract since 2007 - the old worn out excuse that 'we are currently in tough economic times' doesn't hold any water any more. The economy was doing just fine back in 2007 and the Police and Fire Departments should have been given a contract with a raise back then, just like all of the other city departments did."

What came from McMahon's heart should touch all of us on this anniversary, and as we begin Police Month.

"While in the performance of their duty, I have never heard of any City Council member:

Saving anyone's life

Prying anyone out of a wreck

Chasing an armed criminal down a dark alley

Working to total physical exhaustion

Running into, or on top of, a burning building

Getting paralyzed

Getting 2nd and 3rd degree burns

Getting disfigured

Diving into the lake, river or lagoon at night - in all seasons

Had someone die in their arms

Putting dead victims in body bags

Getting buried in a building collapse

Comfort an abused child

Catch a communicable disease

Being exposed to deadly carcinogens and other health hazards

Subjected to random drug and alcohol screening

Shot at, stabbed, spit on or assaulted

Getting killed in the line of duty

But I do know of thousands of police and fireman that have, and do all these things on a daily basis without hesitation, and all they've ever asked for is a little respect and a living wage to raise their families with. The average person couldn't, or wouldn't do these jobs effectively, and would never even consider putting themselves in harm's way and risk their life for someone they don't even know, not for any amount of money.

Before anyone passes judgment on the members of the Chicago Police and Fire Departments, I'd challenge them to see if they could last one week alongside these dedicated men and women, and just stay with them, no matter what, and do what they are asked to do, in a moment's notice! This challenge extends to every citizen, journalist, alderman, or any other politician in the city of Chicago, including our Honorable Mayor, Richard M. Daley."

CPD Morale Survey

For months, Chicago police officers have been saying privately that morale at the department is at an all-time low. Now Supt. Jody Weis wants to see just how true that may be.
The department launched an online survey of its members last week, hoping to determine how they feel about morale and stress on the job. The survey, conducted with the help of University of Illinois at Chicago researchers, is intended to examine how well pilot programs for alternative shifts are going but also give Weis a look at overall morale, said Bill Dougherty, first vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police, which represents rank-and-file officers.

The survey, which includes more than 50 questions, asks department members about how their job affects time with their families, their satisfaction with the department and even whether they've considered working for other departments, Dougherty said.

Department members have until mid-June to complete the online survey, and results are expected by the end of summer, police said.

"We want to provide the best workplace environment for our employees," Weis said in a statement. "That is why we are interested in the experiences of our department members and how they are affected by everyday work issues. We encourage everyone to fill out the survey in an open and honest manner."

The department and UIC are promising that those who participate in the survey won't be identified, although they will have to input a code to allow the department to measure responses by years of service and unit.

Though the FOP helped draft the survey, Dougherty said the union hasn't endorsed the survey for its members because it wasn't allowed to take part in the collection of the surveys.

When I came on in the 90's they had a rating system which they are trying to implement again. This rating system was a joke everyone who worked the desk or in the commanders officer received a 90% or higher. If you received a 75% or lower you didn't get your step raise . They could only give out so many 90's & 80's scores. Guess what if a Sgt. didn't like you your stuck with a low score which many officers refused to sign .
Morale will go even lower with this idiotic rating system i hope the FOP does something about this

The victims, ages 19 to 23 years old, were found tied up on Saturday, but their deaths were not reported earlier because they were under investigation, said Fermin Gomez, an assistant state prosecutor in Baja California.
U.S. consular officials in Tijuana said the victims — two men and two women from the San Diego and Chula Vista areas — were U.S. citizens. The state attorney general's office in Baja California said one of the women was Mexican.
Their deaths are the latest in a string of violence in Tijuana that authorities blame on a bloody turf war between drug cartels.
"I just don't think kids should be going to Tijuana right now," Chula Vista police Lt. Scott Arsenault told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "They ran into the wrong people, obviously."
Bernard Gonzales, a spokesman for the Chula Vista Police Department, said a friend told the women's parents they were headed to nightclubs in Tijuana on Thursday night. They were reported missing the next day when they did not answer their cell phones.

It reported that "More than 200 U.S. citizens have been slain in Mexico’s escalating wave of violence since 2004—an average of nearly one killing a week…" and that " More U.S. citizens suffered unnatural deaths in Mexico than in any other foreign country—excluding military killed in combat zones—from 2004 to 2007, State Department statistics show." (There are also 75 Americans missing in Mexico).

A Chicago police Canine Unit officer is looking for his animal partner who was spooked by a clap of thunder and jumped the fence at the officer's Southwest Side home Wednesday night, police said.

The dog, named Bear, is a German shepherd and has been missing since about 10:30 p.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

The officer took the dog out into the backyard of his home in the 3800 block of West 109th Street about 10:30 p.m. during a lull in Wednesday night's thunderstorms, Kubiak said.

A clap of thunder scared Bear and "all of a sudden" he climbed a 5-foot fence and took off in an easterly direction, Kubiak said.

The male German shepherd is black and tan, and weighs about 74 pounds. He has a computer chip under his skin that identifies him, Kubiak said. He is about 2-1/2 years old, according to police.

Authorities are running a bulletin about Bear over the Chicago police band radio.

Bear's human partner was "out almost all night looking for him," went home and slept for a few hours, and was beginning his search again about 8 a.m., Kubiak said.

Anyone who locates Bear should call the Chicago Police Canine Unit at 312-746-7180, Kubiak said.

The Chicago Police Department will begin evaluating its officers next year in a new way, examining not only officers' job performance but also their attitudes, ability to adapt and interactions with the public.
The department did away with its evaluation rating system about six years ago after complaints that it was too inconsistent and essentially a "popularity contest," Deputy Supt. of Patrol Daniel Dugan said.

Under the new system, officers will be judged on their accountability and dependability, problem-solving and decision-making, adaptability and responsiveness, communication with others and job knowledge and professional development.

A general order issued recently gave detailed examples. Officers who fail to spot a suspect in a vehicle stop or deal angrily with the public could be tagged with "requires improvement" or "unacceptable" marks. Officers could earn "exceeds expectations" marks for going out of their way to volunteer for extra assignments or for suggesting changes to improve current policies.

Other examples mention officers' attitudes toward department bosses or change -- a tenet sources say was included because of poor morale in the department. Dugan said that though attitude can affect officers' performances, the department is really trying to focus on getting officers to maintain professionalism.

"We're not asking everybody to go out and have a smile on their face every time," Dugan said. "Let's face facts. ... We see the underbelly of life and it has its toll. But we do expect officers to go out there and perform their job."

And while there's no mention of having to make a certain number of arrests or issue a certain number of tickets, officers could be judged for that too, if they're not addressing needs in their districts. As an example, Dugan cited issuing few traffic tickets in an area that has a high number of traffic crashes.

The ratings could have a real impact on officers' careers, even leading to termination for incompetence for the poorest performers.

Dugan said the new evaluation system will make evaluations fairer.

"Now the officers have some type of guidelines on what's expected of them and they'll know exactly what it is they're going to be evaluated for," Dugan said.

Dennis J. Kenney, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said few departments create comprehensive performance evaluations because they find it difficult to define exactly what makes a good police officer. Though he applauded Chicago's effort, he said the department should be careful not to hold all officers -- from rookies to veterans -- to the same standard.

"Part of the problem with the sort of subject evaluation is the supervisors who are doing the evaluation see far too little of the officer to actually know what they do," Kenney said.

BAGHDAD (May 11) - A U.S. soldier opened fire on fellow troops and at least five were killed Monday, the Pentagon and U.S. Command said.
It was unclear if the shooter was among the dead in the shooting, which the U.S. Command said in a brief statement occurred about 2 p.m. at Camp Liberty near Baghdad International Airport.
Pentagon officials first indicated that an Army soldier shot the others and then turned the gun on himself. Later, the officials said it was unclear whether the shooter was among the five dead.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue is sensitive and details unclear.
There have been several incidents recently when gunmen dressed as Iraqi soldiers have opened fire on American troops, including an attack in the northern city of Mosul on May 2 when two soldiers and the gunman were killed.
The toll from the Monday shooting was the highest for U.S. personnel in a single attack since April 10, when a suicide truck driver killed five American soldiers with a blast near a police headquarters in Mosul. The U.S. death toll in April was 19, the highest in seven months, amid an upsurge of violence in Iraq.

"What we're trying to do is reorient government activity toward things that work," said White House Budget Director Peter Orszag.

Obama proposed:

• Ending $26 billion in oil and gas industry tax breaks, which he called "unjustifiable loopholes" in the tax system that other industries do not get.

• Slashing almost in half a benefits program for the families of slain police and safety officers from $110 million to $60 million.

• Eliminating federal support for a $35 million-a-year radio-based marine navigation system rendered obsolete by the satellite-based Global Positioning System.

• Doing away with a $142 million program to help states pay to clean up abandoned mines.

• Abolishing an Education Department attache's post in Paris, at a savings of $632,000 per year.

He proposed:

• Plowing $2 billion more into merit-based teacher pay to help failing schools turn around. He would spend $370 million on a successor to the Reading First literacy program, a key element of Bush's No Child Left Behind law.

• Spending an additional $584 million for pandemic flu efforts, on top of the $1.5 billion in emergency money for 2009 that he asked Congress for in the wake of the swine flu outbreak.

• Increasing child nutrition programs by $1 billion, partly to pay for a 20 percent increase in the number of food inspectors.

• Setting up a $1 billion program to develop or rehabilitate housing for the poor.

Obama proposed more money for the Labor Department to hire about 1,000 new employees, including 670 new investigators and other staffers to enforce safety, health, minimum wage, overtime and other laws.

"Fellow Democrats may well reject some of those revisions, including Obama's proposal to stop paying states and counties that keep illegal immigrants in their jails. He also proposed doing away with Even Start, a $66 million program to promote child literacy that the administration argues is not as effective as other early-childhood education programs like Head Start.

Bush had sought to end both programs — only to be rebuffed by the Democratic Congress.

Despite redoubling its efforts to portray itself as tough on waste and spending, the administration and Congress have taken the nation on a steady course of higher federal spending. In rapid succession has come passage of a $787 billion economic recovery bill, a $410 billion omnibus appropriations bill and Congress' $3.4 trillion budget for next year, which calls for increases of almost 10 percent over current funding for non-defense agency budgets.

Even as Obama spoke, a key House panel was adding about $12 billion to his war-spending request.

Many items in the budget are about more than money.

It affirms the administration's prohibition on so-called warrantless wiretapping — the Bush administration electronic surveillance program.

And it would provide $197 million to find an alternative to the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project in Nevada, another setback to the nuclear power industry from the administration — but a welcome gesture to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has long sought to block the project 90 miles from Las Vegas.

Obama is claiming savings from eliminating a host of accounts typically earmarked by members of Congress such as a $10 million West Virginia highway project obtained by Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., and $15 million obtained by Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., for diesel emissions reduction grants.

In fact, some of the cuts, like terminating production of C-17 cargo aircraft and phasing out direct payments to farmers with sales exceeding $500,000 annually, have already been rejected by Obama's allies in Congress.

About half the budget savings would come from an effort by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to curb military programs, including ending production of the F-22 fighter and killing a much-maligned replacement helicopter fleet for the president that's way over budget.

My father could have divorced her but he told us back then he wouldn't have been able to get custody she was our primary caregiver my father worked to jobs and was an alcoholic. They did separate for a few weeks only to get back together and my dad quit drinking. So it was back to the same old stuff I never bonded with my mother I don't feel love for her like I do the rest of my family you know why because she has never gotten help. In a little-noticed move in December 2006, Blagojevich pardoned the successful Oak Park restaurateur for an old tax-fraud conviction. And the now-impeached governor took the additional step of forever wiping that blemish from Abu-Taleb's record.

Something else sets Abu-Taleb apart from those others: the campaign contributions that rolled in to Blagojevich from a powerful Chicago law firm run, in part, by an Abu-Taleb relative who was a character witness in the clemency case.

Between 2002 and 2007, the law firm of Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw gave Blagojevich more than $207,000 -- including $25,000 in 2006, the year Blagojevich granted Abu-Taleb clemency. John Gearen -- Abu-Taleb's cousin by marriage -- is a longtime partner at the firm.

Rieck & Crotty, which represented Abu-Taleb, gave a total of $23,541 more to Blagojevich, though that was in 2001 and 2002, before the firm took on the clemency case.

Attorney James Montana, who also represented Abu-Taleb, says the campaign contributions played no role in Abu-Taleb's "appropriately granted" clemency bid, noting his client never personally gave to Blagojevich and that it took two years for the ex-governor to act after the pardon case was first presented.

An offbeat question put to President Barack Obama at a White House press conference on Wednesday night -- asking the president to say what had surprised, troubled, enchanted and humbled him most during his first 100 days in office -- prompted Obama to write each word down before carefully contemplating an answer to each.
The president said he was most surprised by the number of critical issues that seem to be coming to a head all at once. While most past US presidents have faced two or three major issues, Obama said his administration has "seven or eight" big problems to deal with.
"I did not anticipate the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression (of the 1930s)," he said.
Obama said he was most troubled -- "sobered" was his preferred word -- by the fact that change in Washington comes slowly, and that "political posturing and bickering" continue even amid crises.
"I wish people would take a timeout on the political games," he said.

On the enchantment question, the president said that "enchanted was not the right word," but that he was "so profoundly grateful" for the role of the men and women of the US military.
When he meets with them, Obama said he feels the "extraordinary sacrifice" they make on behalf of all Americans.
"They are fiercely loyal to our country," he said, and they serve without complaint.
Obama said he was most humbled by the fact that while the US president is "extraordinarily powerful," the White House is just part of a "broad tapestry" in America, which has many centers of power.

(April 27) -- A Lawrence, Kan., man died Saturday after he was struck by a bolt of lightning as he and six companions rode their motorcycles through a rainstorm, the Lawrence Journal-World reported.
Troy Gentzler, 45, was killed shortly after visiting an abuse victim for the northeast Kansas chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse.
The bolt struck as the group was traveling between the towns of Grantville and Perry.
"You can sum it up in one word: bizarre," Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig told the newspaper.
A woman riding next to Gentzler was injured in the accident. She was treated at a hospital and released.
Bikers Against Child Abuse supports children who have suffered physical or sexual abuse. Members of Gentzler's chapter conducted their annual tour Saturday, visiting people who had been in the program for several years, the Journal-World reported. Gentzler had been a member for about two years.

The Truth About The Navy Seals Rescue

The REAL SEALS Story
All of us want to raise our glass the highest this week to the Navy SEALs who popped those three Somali pirates. And I'm sure you want to hear the real story of what happened. Especially because there is a revoltingly opportunistic and cowardly side to it. Guess which side Zero (O-bama) is on.

Why, for example, did it take SEAL Team Six (aka DEVGRU, Navy Special Warfare Development Group, the Navy's equivalent of Delta Force) over 36 hours to get to the scene?

Because Zero refused to authorize the SEAL deployment for those 36 hours, during which the OSC - the on scene commander, Cmdr. Frank Castellano of the USS Bainbridge - repeatedly requested them.

Once the SEALs arrived - parachuting from a C-17 into the ocean near the ship - Zero then imposed Rules of Engagement (ROE) specifying the SEALs could not do anything unless the life of the hostage, Captain Richard Phillips, was in "imminent" danger.

Thus, when Capt. Phillips attempted to escape by jumping off the lifeboat into the ocean, the SEAL snipers had all four pirates (one later surrendered) sighted in and could have taken them out then and there - but they could not fire due to Zero's ROE restrictions.

When the SEALs approached the lifeboat in a RIB (rigid-hull inflatable boat) carrying supplies for Capt. Phillips and the pirates, the pirates fired upon them. Not only was no fire returned due to the ROE, but as the pirates were shooting at the RIB, SEAL snipers on the Bainbridge had them all dialed in. No triggers were pulled due to the ROE.

Two specific rescue plans were developed by Cmdr. Castellano and the SEAL teams. Zero personally refused to authorize them.

After the second refusal and days of dithering, Cmdr. Castellano decided he had the Operational Area and OSC authority to "solely determine risk to hostage" and did not require any further approval of the president.

Four hours later, the White House is informed that three pirates are dead and Capt. Phillips has been rescued unharmed. A WH press release is immediately issued, giving credit to the president for his "daring and decisive" behavior that resulted in such success.

Zero has absolutely no military knowledge or experience whatsoever. He demanded decisional control over the entire hostage drama to the last detail. All actions required his personal approval. He dithered like a coward while the world laughed at our warships flummoxed by four illiterate teenagers with AKs in a lifeboat.

Only when the Navy Commander decided to ignore his Pantywaist-in Chief and take action and responsibility himself, were the incredible skills of the SEALs put into play.

That Zero could cynically and opportunistically claim that his "bold" "calm" "tough" leadership was responsible should remind everyone that not a single action, not a single word of this man can be trusted. He is bereft of honesty and moral character. That's why he's Zero.

The HFR raises a glass full of pride and gratitude to Navy Commander Frank Castellano, the Navy SEALs for their incredible competence, and our military. Let's hold a Tea Party in their honor.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama signed into law Tuesday a measure designed to strengthen national community service efforts by boosting federal funding for thousands of volunteers in fields ranging from clean energy to health care and education.

The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, recently renamed to honor the Massachusetts senator's sponsorship of the measure, will more than triple the number of positions in the AmeriCorps program, from 75,000 to 250,000, by 2017.

"Our government can help to rebuild our economy ... [but] we need Americans willing to mentor our eager young children, or care for the sick, or ease the strains of deployment on our military families," Obama said.

"All that's required on your part is a willingness to make a difference. And that is, after all, the beauty of service. Anybody can do it."

Kennedy, his niece Caroline Kennedy, former President Bill Clinton, and former first lady Rosalynn Carter were in attendance when Obama signed the measure into law at a Washington-area school that encourages volunteerism as part of its curriculum.

Older Americans will also be encouraged to volunteer more through the creation of a "Silver Scholars" program, under which individuals 55 and older who perform 350 hours of service receive a $1,000 award.

The law increases the existing AmeriCorps educational stipend offered to volunteers to $5,350 -- the same amount as the maximum Pell college grant.

Critics have contended the law is fiscally irresponsible in light of the economic downturn. They also argue that the concept of volunteerism is undermined by providing financial compensation for community service.

The law is expected to cost roughly $6 billion over the next five years.

The ex-governor himself is expected to be in the courtroom this morning to try to get U.S. District Judge James Zagel's permission to travel to Costa Rica.
In a twist, the Sun-Times has learned that Blagojevich's lawyers are expected to offer to sign an extradition waiver to allay any concerns of allowing a defendant to travel out of the country while on bond. Blagojevich's lawyer, Sheldon Sorosky, said he will likely offer up the extradition waiver if it will bolster Blagojevich's chances of going.
Ultimately, it will be up to Zagel to decide whether television viewers will get to see Illinois' former chief executive tough it out in the jungles of Costa Rica.
Representatives and an attorney from the "Survivor"-style reality show "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here" might also attend the hearing. Pending court approval, Blagojevich has signed on to do the prime-time NBC program that pays contestants up to $80,000 an episode. Filming starts in June, so Blagojevich's contract finalization is looming.
While prosecutors are expected to oppose the move, the defense is expected to portray it as a job opportunity. Blago has been out of work since he was booted out of office in January.
Because Blagojevich isn't deemed a flight risk or a threat to society, there's no outright legal barrier from doing the show. It will be up to Zagel's discretion.

"There may be other victims out there, and if you are, we want you to come forward," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said. "Our top priority is holding Philip Markoff accountable. He's a predator."
Conley said evidence from computer forensic experts and "old-fashioned shoe leather" linked Markoff to the two crimes. The man police say is Markoff was seen on video surveillance using a hand-held texting device at several of the hotels.
But Markoff's fiancee says police have the wrong man and there is no way he could have done it.
In an e-mail to ABC's "Good Morning America, Megan McAllister said Philip Markoff "could not hurt a fly." She called him "a beautiful person inside and out," according to the message read on the air Tuesday.

Erie patrol officer James Cousins II, 40, was suspended for the profanity-laced off-duty rant in which he talks about Rondale Jennings Sr., 31, who died March 28 of a gunshot to the head outside the bar.

On the tape, Cousins says he took a picture because the body was lying below a malt liquor sign that reads "Take it to the head." He laughs as he recounts seeing the dead man's leg twitch and the reaction of the victim's mother as she identifies him.

The Rev. Michael T. Williams, president of Erie's African American Concerned Clergy, called for the officer's dismissal at a news conference Friday.

Chicago Attorney Convicted Of Delivering Drugs To Inmate

A Chicago attorney was convicted Thursday of delivering drugs and paraphernalia hidden in legal documents to a Cook County Jail inmate last year, prosecutors announced today.

After a bench trial, a Cook County judge found Nathan Billmaier, 35, guilty of bringing contraband into a penal institution and possession with intent to deliver, according to a statement from the office of State's Atty. Anita Alvarez.

Billmaier, of the 1900 block of West Potomac Avenue, was accused of delivering drugs and paraphernalia on as many as six occasions between February and May of 2008, authorities said. Authorities only charged him in one instance.

He was arrested with nine flattened tinfoil packages that contained 4 ounces of marijuana, 4 ounces of contraband tobacco, 6 Ecstasy tablets and 40 matches, authorities said at the time.

The drugs were being delivered with the help of a girlfriend of a jail inmate who put the drugs in tinfoil and hid them in large stacks of legal documents, prosecutors said.

The woman would allegedly hand the documents to Billmaier who would deliver them to inmate Donald Jordan, who was being held on charges of murder, violation of parole and a previous charge of possessing contraband in jail.

According to testimony, Billmaier was paid between $500 and $700 for each delivery and made a total of $3,600.

13 Officers Charged Last Year With DUI

Thirteen Chicago police officers were arrested last year on drunken driving charges, and five of them were involved in car crashes, two with injuries, the department says.

Police Supt. Jody Weis, who took office last year after officers had been arrested in two high-profile bar beatings, created a new bureau to evaluate officer conduct and training, pushed for more department-wide messages warning of excessive drinking and approved advanced training for department peer counselors to deal with alcohol abuse issues.

After Friday's crash involving detective Joseph Frugoli, Weis changed departmental policy to require that any officer who suspects another officer of being intoxicated to notify the on-duty watch commander, who must then go to the scene. Internal affairs will also be immediately notified.

Four of the officers were arrested by Chicago police, three in the suburbs and six out of state, police said.

Weis earlier this week pointed out the small number of officers who have been accused of driving drunk compared to the department's 13,000 officers. Statistically speaking, about one in 1,000 Chicago officers were arrested for DUI last year. That pales by comparison to a national average of one drunk-driving arrest for every 155 drivers, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services statistics.

Still, Weis acknowledged that officers have responsibilities that require them to be held to a higher standard.

"The residents of Chicago rightfully expect the police to protect them from drunk drivers, not to become part of the problem," Weis said in the e-mail.

More than 500 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer every day.

On March 13, I was one of them.

It was as if someone had strapped me into the cab of a roller coaster.

Each new test jerked me up a monstrous incline; each new piece of information flung me into an abyss.

And still I consider myself blessed.

I have the support of family and friends who believe in the power of prayer.

I have medical insurance and understanding employers.

And I have a team of compassionate, well-trained doctors.

On February 10, during a routine physical, my longtime family doctor, Dr. James P. Baraglia, felt a lump.

It just so happened I was scheduled to take a mammogram that same day.

Twenty-eight days later, after a follow-up ultrasound and a biopsy, I got the diagnosis over the phone.

"You have a cancer," the radiologist told me.

Still, the doctors described what I have -- ductal carcinoma in situ as well as infiltrating breast cancer -- as a "sneaky" and "wild" form of breast cancer.

Nearly two dozen people held a silent protest Monday night outside the Bridgeport home of police detective Joseph Frugoli, according to WMAQ-Channel 5.

Some protesters said they believed that Frugoli was receiving special treatment because he is Chicago cop.

On Sunday, Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. set a $500,000 bail for Frugoli, charged with killing two men in a drunken-driving accident. Some of the victims' friends and family members said the bail was too low Sunday -- a complaint echoed by protesters Monday.

Frugoli was freed on bail Sunday afternoon.

Protesters said they plan to return to the Frugoli home.

Earlier Monday, Frugoli refused to comment about his case, according to WMAQ.

WEST BABYLON, N.Y.---- A retired New York City police officer shot an off-duty officer he suspected was having an affair with his police officer wife, then killed himself in the driveway of his suburban home, police said Saturday.

Cecil Ramsay, 51, shot himself in the head after firing at a car carrying his wife and a friend, both off-duty NYPD officers, Suffolk County police said.

He shot Officer Edwin Chittick in the hand after accusing him "of seeing his wife," said Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.

"It's our understanding that that is not the case. They're just acquaintances," Fitzpatrick said.

Ramsay fired at least three times at the Mercedes-Benz as his wife, Dady Belfort, drove away with a wounded Chittick, Fitzpatrick said.

He then put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger in front of several construction workers doing work on his home, Fitzpatrick said.

A Mercedes-Benz registered to the address of the West Babylon home -- its driver and passenger seats smeared with blood -- was on the grounds of a Long Island hospital for several hours Saturday.

Ramsay had been ill with heart problems and was awaiting a heart transplant, Fitzpatrick said.

An off-duty police officer was shot in what might have been an attempted carjacking in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, police said.

The incident occurred about 2:50 a.m. in the 8700 block of Halsted Street, News Affairs Officer John Henry said citing preliminary information.

An offender apparently approached and shot the 36-year-old male officer in the arm, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the officer and the offender, Henry said.

The officer was taken to an area hospital in good condition, he said.

Nobody was in custody as of 3:40 a.m., he said.

No further information on the case was immediately available.

An off-duty Chicago Police detective charged with killing two men in a drunken-driving crash has been involved in other serious wrecks, including one not far from the scene of Friday’s fatal collision on the Dan Ryan Expy. and another that injured two police officers.

Just last week, Joseph Frugoli was ordered to pay $7,100 to Joseph Cairo after a jury trial involving a 2005 accident.

Joseph Frugoli, the off-duty Chicago Police detective charged with killing two men in a Friday drunken-driving crash, has been involved in previous serious accidents.
Frugoli, now 41, was driving a new BMW sedan that rear-ended Cairo’s Jeep Cherokee on the in-bound Dan Ryan near 31st. Cairo, 65, struck a median and suffered neck and shoulder injuries, while Frugoli went to the hospital for a head injury, records show.

Cairo’s lawyer, Benjamin Kelly of the Vrdolyak Law Group, said Frugoli gave two stories about the accident: he told the State Police at the accident scene that he did not know what happened. But in a legal deposition, Frugoli said Cairo slammed on his brakes, causing the crash. Kelly denied that Cairo caused the collision.

Frugoli also testified that at the time of that 2:50 a.m. accident, he was headed to a bar on Halsted on the Near West Side. He denied he had been drinking. He said he was off-duty and scheduled to work that afternoon.

“The guys from work had called me, told me they were out,” he said in a deposition.

Cairo owns a bar near Midway Airport and was on his way to clean it up, Kelly said. Both men live in the Bridgeport neighborhood near the site of their collision.

“Their cars were demolished,” Kelly said. “By the grace of God, my client wasn’t killed.”

Frugoli’s other accidents include a collision with a Chicago Police car on the South Side.

At 5 a.m. on Jan. 27 of last year, Frugoli was driving a BMW sedan near the intersection of 37th and Wallace in Bridgeport when he allegedly ran a stop sign and struck the police car, injuring two officers, records show.

The officers who responded to the crash were investigated for failing to tell their supervisors in a timely manner that an off-duty officer was involved in the crash, but they were cleared of wrongdoing, sources said. Frugoli was cited in the accident, but the responding officers said they did not have evidence that Frugoli was intoxicated.

Earlier this week, Nour Hadid, 25, was charged with one count of first-degree murder for the death of her two-year-old niece, Bhia. Her police booking photo was released Tuesday to the media.

"To be show in the newspaper, splashed on the news is really a violation of her rights."
However, Hadid's husband, Alaeddin, says that exposing his wife's face to the public is an "insult against our religion."

Orland Park detectives say they treated Hadid as they would any other suspect. The photograph depicts Hadid without her hijab (headscarf) and in a revealing top. She appears to be emotional and trying to cover her chest and shoulders with her hands.

Alaeddin and Nour Hadid are practicing Muslims. According to custom, Alaeddin says his wife "never leaves the home without covering up."

"It is against our religion," Alaeddin said, reports the Southtown Star. "We do not do this in our culture."

Alaeddin, who believes that Nour is innocent, has threatened to sue.

A number of Islamic advocacy groups—the Council on Islamic-American Relations, the Islamic Society of North America, and the Bridgeview Mosque Foundation—have declined to comment on the matter. Due to the circumstances of the case, they may be hesitant to weigh in on the controversy.

"It's particularly humiliating because she appears to be in her underwear," said Kareem Irfan, former chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Chicago, "[but] I don't condone what she's alleged to have done."

6th Grader Sues Her Father & Wins

Most kids complain bitterly when they are grounded. Some will sneak out, while others will settle for slamming doors and announcing that they hate the person making the rules. But sometimes, kids get creative when they're punished: A 6th grader in Quebec sued her dad because she felt that his punishment was too harsh.

The 12-year-old girl's parents are divorced; in the spring of 2008, the girl's mom gave her permission to go on a class trip to Quebec City in June. But the middle-schooler lived with her father, and after she disobeyed daddy's orders to stay off the Internet, he told her she couldn't go. So what did she do? She took him to court. Of course.

A lower court ruled in favor of the girl, who went on the embattled class trip. Her father appealed -- on principle - -and amazingly, the girl won again. The father's attorney, Kim Beaudoin, says that her client is "flabbergasted" and they are considering another appeal, this time to Canada's Supreme Court. But, the attorney adds, the father has no regrets about the court proceedings. "Either way, he doesn't have authority over this child anymore. She sued him because she doesn't respect his rules," Beaudoin said. "It's very hard to raise a child who is the boss."
Now, I don't know a lot about the law, but I watch enough "Law & Order" to know that one thing that counts in the legal world is precedent. CBC News says that "the appeal court warned [that] the case should not be seen as an open invitation for children to take legal action every time they're grounded." But here's thing: If you don't want someone to consider using your ruling in other cases, maybe you shouldn't make the ruling. And what could the judge's reasoning possibly have been? Lucie Fortin, the Legal Aid lawyer who helped the girl take her pops to court, said that "The trip was very important" to the daughter. How is that a legal argument? Don't parents have the right to punish their children? (This is like making Consensual Living a legal requirement.)

Sadly, the case has destroyed the relationship between the girl and her father. "We went from a child who wanted to live with her father, and after all this has been done, they're not speaking anymore." The father's attorney adds, "We have a lot of work to re-establish a link between those two."

"I just, it's almost like I heard her crying out, saying, 'Somebody, notice me. Somebody, really notice me. Here I am in the crowd crying out, somebody, somebody, hear my voice,'" she said.

Eiffel, 36, is part of a small group of people across the world who call themselves "objectum sexuals" where their intimate life revolves around objects, not people. The objects can range from a home computer to a set of drums or a national monument, anything they can feel a connection to. It may sound strange to most of us, but it's very real to them.

"We feel an innate connection to objects. It comes perfectly normal to us to connect on various levels, emotional, spiritual and also physical for some," Eiffel said.
Medical experts ABC News contacted said they were not familiar with objectum sexuals, some said it might be classified as paraphilia – a disorder in which a person has an unusual sexual interest. Some psychologists suggest that people with the condition may have been sexually abused.

Certified sexologist Amy Marsh, from Albany, Calif., has a different take. She said objectum sexual is not a disorder, but possibly a new sexual orientation. Marsh said she's been surveying a small online community of people with OS.

"One person said, 'They're real, they're complex, and they are no less and no more of value than other romantic relationships'," Marsh said.

"There's been very little research done on objectum sexuality," Marsh continued. "I can tell you that what I'm finding is not much history of sexual abuse, and actually not much in the way of psychiatric diagnoses either. I'm finding they're very happy, and they don't want to change. I am also finding out that quite a few of them have a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome or autism, but not everybody."

Eiffel said she doesn't have Asperger's syndrome, nor does she believe her chaotic childhood -- shuffling between foster homes before she was adopted -- contributed to OS.

Police Chief Tasers Wife ! Ouch

The police chief of a small Central Texas town was arrested April 6 after he allegedly used a Taser on his wife. Oly Ivy, 30, was charged with aggravated assault. The Oakwood City Council voted to fire him immediately. Ivy's attorney said his client "is taking these allegations very seriously."

Ivy, 30, was arrested near Palestine on Monday. The city council fired him that night.
Ivy's attorney, Charley Johnson, told KXXV-TV in Waco that his client "is taking these allegations very seriously." He says he intends for Ivy to "be treated the same as anybody in this situation."
Ivy was hired in February to be the lone full-time officer in the town of 500 residents about 100 miles southeast of Dallas. The department has two reserve officers

Obama Chia-pet Racist?

Sometimes controversy springs forth from the most unlikely places. Walgreens stores in Chicago and Tampa recently introduced a new version of the lovably tacky botanical totem known as Chia-Pet. Yes, "the pottery that grows" has entertained Americans for years now, and along the way it has evolved into various shapes: kittens, trees dogs, elephants, even Mr. T. You name the shape, so long as the sprouting seeds give the appearance of growing hair or fur, Chia was a guaranteed hit. Well, that was before Chia-Obama.

Via Wired comes word that this presidential version is being pulled from Walgreens' shelves:

Spokesman Robert Elfinger said store managers have the ability to market products of their choice. But the top brass of the Deefield, Illinois-based drug chain was not amused by some of its Tampa and Chicago managers' choices to market the President Obama likeness.

"We got some complaints from people that they thought it was racist," Elfinger said in a telephone interview.

When I assumed the role of Superintendent more than a year ago, the Chicago Police Department was under intense public scrutiny, following several high-profile cases of alleged police misconduct by a small group of officers. I have come to learn that the vast majority of this Department is made up of hard working, dedicated and honest police officers, who work tirelessly to serve and protect the residents of Chicago.

Morale is a very important issue to me, as it should be to every supervisor in the Department. I recognize that there are well-founded concerns, regarding a variety of issues. Many of these issues pre-dated my arrival. Nonetheless, I have been working hard to fix them. When others attempt to exploit these issues to further their own agendas and then question the morale within the Department, and thus the dedication and service of the men and women who protect our city, I am compelled to respond. In my year as Superintendent, I have worked to address many of the issues that have been voiced as priority concerns of yours, the members of the Department.

· Lawsuits ? Many of you are concerned about lawsuits and feel that the City settles too many cases. The City cannot control the number of lawsuits that are filed, but we are working to reduce them. We have met repeatedly with the City?s Law Department and the new State?s Attorney to improve training for both our personnel as well as the ASA?s. Please realize that settlements are driven by a variety of causes and are not always focused on officer conduct. Settlement decisions are often made to protect an officer from a long legal fight and the issue of out-of-pocket punitive damages. Officers have a say in whether the City settles or fights a lawsuit, but the stakes can be high for the officer individually. On April 10th, the Department is hosting the first ever civil litigation seminar to educate officers and address their concerns regarding civil litigation.

· Discipline ? There have been concerns that I would be overly aggressive on discipline because I worked for the FBI. My standard is simple: reasonableness. You don?t always have to be right, just act in a reasonable manner. I have worked to implement a more fair and consistent review process for relief of powers. I have made it clear that when the discipline investigation determines that an officer will not be recommended for separation, I want officers back out on the street doing the work they were hired to do. This process has resulted in fewer officers being stripped in 2008 than in previous years and more officers being reinstated in 2008 than in previous years.

· Alternate Work Schedule - My commitment to implement an alternate work schedule was in response to hundreds of complaints that I heard from officers during a series of Town Hall meetings and other forums with you, the rank and file. As with any negotiation, there were obstacles put forth that were overcome by the Department. We brought the unions to the table and negotiated the best pilot that we could for our officers and department. A series of different schedules are now in place and being tested, with input coming from officers and management. I am optimistic that we will have a schedule that works for our officers and for the Department at the end of the pilot.

· Vehicles ? Recently, the Department purchased 180 Tahoes. Starting last Tuesday, delivery began. An average of three vehicles per day are now being supplied to the busiest districts. We have also applied for $6 million in federal stimulus money for the purchase of 120 more vehicles.

· Portable Data Terminals (PDTs) ? New PDTs are now installed in sixteen districts and various specialized units. An additional two hundred and seventy four (274) are now in stock and ready for installation, with an order for two hundred and eighty nine (289) placed this week. A total of five hundred and sixty three (563) brand new PDTs will be installed throughout the Department starting in the coming weeks, for completion before the end of 2009

· Officer Safety- The lack of equal firepower by officers has been an issue that I have worked on since my arrival. I am committed to ensuring that our officers are trained and have the ability to deploy with better weapons. The carbine program was started and we continue to deploy carbines. As of today, there are almost 400 in stock and we are installing more vehicle gun locks everyday. In addition, I have also allowed officers that qualify to use carbines the option to purchase their own weapon, to further facilitate their availability to street officers when needed.

· Overtime Initiatives - I recognize that officers are facing the same economic issues that the rest of the population is and I have fought to expand overtime opportunities. I have also directed that many of the existing programs follow the same procedures to make the access to overtime initiatives fair and open to all qualified personnel. We have applied for over $9 million in federal stimulus money to pay for overtime initiatives. This will not only allow us to do more with the officers we have, but will result in more officers on the street, as back-up and to fight crime.

I have met with many of you over the course of the last year. Given the size of the Department, I am at a disadvantage in reaching you all personally. I have utilized video streaming, town hall meetings, roll calls, marches, community meetings and more frequent PAX 501 messages to reach out to you to improve overall communications and to provide the facts.

I am committed to providing you ? the men and women of this Department ? with the best possible training, equipment, and work environment possible. I know that for many of you, this is a career that you chose, because you believe in the fight to do good everyday.

Your concerns have reached me and I am committed to addressing them to the best of my abilities and improving the system wherever possible to enable you to work effectively.

More importantly, I recognize the intense dedication, integrity and camaraderie amongst the members of this department. I will strive everyday to support your efforts by serving you with honesty, integrity, and hard work.

As hundreds of his officers protest over contracts, Police Superintendent Jody Weis addressed calls for his resignation.
It's the firs time Weis has addressed concerns about his leadership. He insists he takes full responsibility for his department.
"If I, from a firsthand look, saw that I was the cause of morale in this department, no one would have to ask me to leave. I would leave on my own. But when I'm out on the streets, I'm not seeing any indications of poor morale. When a 101 call goes out, officers scramble," said Supt. Weis.

Police officers command automatic respect, particularly in numbers, and they do not engage in public protest often. So the Fraternal Order of Police picketing City Hall this coming Thursday, just as the International Olympic Committee rolls into town for a key visit, is shaping up to be the dramatic civic event of the week.

The idea, the FOP says, is to get Mayor Daley's attention, but I'm wondering if the cops have really thought this through. Isn't that sort of like getting a bull's attention by climbing over the fence and hitting it between the eyes with a plank? Great, now you've got its attention. What happens next?

If asked to toss out a few adjectives to describe our mayor, I'd probably start with "choleric" and "short-fused" but "vindictive" and "vengeful" wouldn't be far behind.

Actually, Daley and the cops make a matched set -- both habitually aggrieved, pretending they don't wield the power they do, hiding behind a false victimhood, treating each new problem that happens on their watch with shock, as if it were an unexpected bolt from the blue, and not a symptom of unaddressed perennial problems.

And while I'm not a gauge of public sympathy, my guess is that Joe Lunchbucket is not with the cops on this one. Between the drip-drip-drip of cop screw-up stories, plus a shuddering general economy rocked by daily mass layoffs and mandatory pay cuts, that 16 percent pay raise over five years the police are so offended by doesn't look that bad to most people -- I'd take it with both hands right now, but, alas, nobody is offering that to newspapermen.

The Chicago Police union might recognize this if they weren't so mad about everything all the time. While as individuals, police officers can be as calm, moderate and sensible as anyone else, somehow, as a group, being honked off has become a Chicago cop hallmark, the same tedious outrage served up daily on cheezedoffcop.com or whatever they call themselves. They don't realize that, if sputtering anger is the only flavor you sell, well, then it gets old, and people just tune you out. Just look at the mayor.

And for the record, yes, picketing is your right. But just because something is a right doesn't make it smart strategy. Anyway, there's no need to argue -- the picketing will occur, and we'll all see just how well it works. Because remember, Mayor Daley isn't going anywhere, he is absolutely fixated on the idea of getting the Olympics, he has a long memory, and paying back enemies is his idea of fun.
