2 Men Being held In Connection With Officer Valadez Murder

Two men were arrested in the killing of Chicago Police Officer Alejandro Valadez early Monday in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

The men -- aged 20 and 21 -- were arrested early Monday shortly after the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old Chicago police officer.

The men are being held as "persons of interest" in the shooting, with police saying that they were occupants of a blue 2007 Pontiac G6 -- a four-door sedan -- that was positively identified as being the vehicle used in the shooting of Chicago police Officer Alejandro Valadez, according to a police report.

The men remained in custody early Tuesday, but no charges have been filed.

Valadez and his partner were responding to a call of gunfire about 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 6000 block of South Hermitage, when someone inside a vehicle fired gunshots at the officer.

Valadez was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County on Monday afternoon, several hours after being critically wounded by a gunshot to the head.

Valadez joined the Chicago Police Department in December 2005 and was most recently assigned to the Englewood (7th) District. He had earned a Department Commendation and 22 Honorable Mentions during his three-year career, according to a release from police.

Valadez is from a "police family," with his brother, sister and fiancée also on the police force. He and his fiancée were expecting a baby boy in September.

He is the third officer killed in the line of duty in the past 12 months, according to Chicago Breaking News.

Officer Nathaniel Taylor, 39, a 14-year veteran, was shot and killed in September while trying to execute a search warrant against a suspected narcotics dealer. Officer Richard Francis, 60, was fatally shot in July during a struggle with a woman causing a disruption on a bus.

A plain-clothes Chicago police officer was shot in the head and critically wounded early this morning in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

The attack occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of South Hermitage Avenue as the 27-year-old three-year veteran officer and his partner were investigating a report of shots fired, said Police Supt. Jody Weis at a news conference in the lobby of police headquarters.

The shots were fired from a vehicle with more than one person in it, Weis said. He refused to discuss that vehicle.

Other police sources said investigators were "zeroing in" on suspects and hoped to announce arrests soon. Weis (right) would only say: "There are some very good investigative leads right now."

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating the case, he said.

The identity of the wounded officer was not being released pending notification of relatives, Weis said, but he added the officer works in the 7th District. In addition to the officer's head wound, he was wounded in the leg, Weis said.

"We have him in our prayers," Weis said. "We'll have to wait and see how this progresses."

The officer was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Police backup and an ambulance were called to the scene.

Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene. Officers continued to search the area for evidence as late as 3 a.m.

Several teams were stationed along Hermitage between 62nd and 60th Streets, including near the field at the southeast corner of Charles W. Earle Elementary School and in an alley in the 6000 block between Hermitage and Wood Street.

Off-Duty Policeman Killed by Officer
(May 29) -- A plainclothes policeman who drew his gun while chasing someone he had found rummaging through his car was shot and killed by a fellow officer who was driving by and saw the pursuit, the police commissioner said.
Commissioner Raymond Kelly said 25-year-old Omar J. Edwards died after being shot late Thursday within blocks of the Harlem police station where he worked.

The shooter was white and Edwards was black, a fact that could raise questions about police use of deadly force in a minority community. And in recent years there have been several cases of off-duty policemen in the New York City area being shot and killed by other officers.
Edwards had just finished his shift around 10:30 p.m. when he headed to his car and saw that the driver's-side window had been smashed and a man was going through the vehicle, Kelly said.
Edwards struggled with the man, who got away from him by slipping out of his sweater, Kelly said. Edwards chased the man up two streets with his gun drawn, he said.
A sergeant and two plainclothes officers in an unmarked police car saw the pursuit and made a U-turn to follow the men, Kelly said. One of the officers jumped out of the car and fired six times, hitting Edwards twice — once in the arm and once in the chest, he said.

A police officer was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on the South Side at midday, authorities said. Four other people also were hurt.

A source said that police were trying to find the officer's weapon. As of 1:48 p.m., about two hours after the accident, the gun had not been located.

The officer was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Hospital Medical Center in Oak Lawn from the crash at 98th and Halsted Streets, said Quention Curtis, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

An older man and woman also were taken to Christ Hospital, and two teenagers were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash, which involved three cars, happened about 11:45 a.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
