Slum-Times Columist Neil Steinberg Attacks Police

30 Mar 09

Police officers command automatic respect, particularly in numbers, and they do not engage in public protest often. So the Fraternal Order of Police picketing City Hall this coming Thursday, just as the International Olympic Committee rolls into town for a key visit, is shaping up to be the dramatic civic event of the week.

The idea, the FOP says, is to get Mayor Daley's attention, but I'm wondering if the cops have really thought this through. Isn't that sort of like getting a bull's attention by climbing over the fence and hitting it between the eyes with a plank? Great, now you've got its attention. What happens next?

If asked to toss out a few adjectives to describe our mayor, I'd probably start with "choleric" and "short-fused" but "vindictive" and "vengeful" wouldn't be far behind.

Actually, Daley and the cops make a matched set -- both habitually aggrieved, pretending they don't wield the power they do, hiding behind a false victimhood, treating each new problem that happens on their watch with shock, as if it were an unexpected bolt from the blue, and not a symptom of unaddressed perennial problems.

And while I'm not a gauge of public sympathy, my guess is that Joe Lunchbucket is not with the cops on this one. Between the drip-drip-drip of cop screw-up stories, plus a shuddering general economy rocked by daily mass layoffs and mandatory pay cuts, that 16 percent pay raise over five years the police are so offended by doesn't look that bad to most people -- I'd take it with both hands right now, but, alas, nobody is offering that to newspapermen.

The Chicago Police union might recognize this if they weren't so mad about everything all the time. While as individuals, police officers can be as calm, moderate and sensible as anyone else, somehow, as a group, being honked off has become a Chicago cop hallmark, the same tedious outrage served up daily on cheezedoffcop.com or whatever they call themselves. They don't realize that, if sputtering anger is the only flavor you sell, well, then it gets old, and people just tune you out. Just look at the mayor.

And for the record, yes, picketing is your right. But just because something is a right doesn't make it smart strategy. Anyway, there's no need to argue -- the picketing will occur, and we'll all see just how well it works. Because remember, Mayor Daley isn't going anywhere, he is absolutely fixated on the idea of getting the Olympics, he has a long memory, and paying back enemies is his idea of fun.

Bitch2:
We have been without a contract since June of 2007 16% over 5 years is only 3.2 % a year its fair. The Mayor decided to pick this fight so yes we are going to fight back .
Today the slum-times filed bankruptcy I hope Mr. Steinberg is the first columnist cut

Daley : The Police " DONT LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD"

Chicago taxpayers have been "very good to public employees," Mayor Daley said Tuesday, advising police officers preparing to embarrass him by picketing when the International Olympic Committee comes to town this week to enter "the real world."

"I just dedicated a brand new police station. No other city is building police stations….We spend an enormous amount of money. We're buying new police cars now. We have no apologies to make to any public employee," Daley said.

"The taxpayers have been very, very good to public employees….Your neighbor-he or she is out of a job. Their son and daughter graduated from college [and] cannot get a job…This is a very tough economic time and public employees have to understand that. This is the real world."

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue said he knows of nobody who "lives more in the real world" than police officers do.

"Of all public city employees, police are the most mindful of tough economic times. We deal with it day- in-and-day-out. When times are tough, crime rises. When times are tough, there are more domestic disputes. When times are tough, we're there to respond," Donahue said.

"If the mayor's concern is that we're not being realistic, instead of taking things off the table, put things on the table we can discuss and negotiate in fairness."

Thursday's 11 a.m. protest by off-duty police officers coincides with the arrival of IOC members conducting their final site visit in Chicago. But, Donahue said the union's goal is not to turn Daley's Olympic dream into a nightmare.

Bitch2:
Wow ! The most corrupt mayor in the country is telling us we don't live in reality. Sounds like KING DALEY is worried about this protest . I hope this puts the nail in the coffin on the Olympic bid.

In Office 3 Weeks Adds $40,000 To Pension

Illinois taxpayers are on the hook for another one of those fat pension deals that state legislators have set up for themselves.

The State Employees Retirement System has signed off on granting former Rep. Kurt Granberg (D-Carlyle) a yearly pension of $113,305.

Which is $40,288 more a year than he would have gotten if his pension were based only on his 22-year legislative career, which ended in mid-January.

Instead, pension officials decided Granberg had earned the higher pension serving as director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a post then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed him to on Jan. 16, less than two weeks before being booted out of office.

Granberg didn't last much longer. He hadn't gotten Senate confirmation yet when Gov. Quinn fired him Feb. 5.

So the pension system had to decide whether to base his retirement payments on his final $85,903-a-year legislative salary or on his $133,300 DNR salary. Lawmakers' pensions are based on 85 percent of their final salary

Obama's Sheep Pledge Project

PLEDGE PROJECT CANVASS SCRIPT

Hi. My name is _____________, and I’m a volunteer with Organizing for America here in
________________(City or Town). How are you today?

(Wait for response and engage with potential supporter in a conversational manner.)

Great! Have you heard about Organizing for America and what we are doing in our community?

(Wait for response and engage with potential supporter in a conversational manner.)

Organizing for America is the continuation of the grassroots movement President Obama
inspired during last year's presidential campaign. In the greatest economic crisis our country in
generations, President Obama needs your help to get America back on track.

Today I'm here to spread the word and build support in our community for the President's plan to
create jobs and renew and strengthen our economy. President Obama knows that in order for our
economy to rebuild we must tackle three critical components at the heart of our country's future:
energy, health care, and education. Especially now, in the midst of these tough times, we cannot
afford to wait any longer for the change we need, and the change that we voted for in November.

President Obama needs your help now. I'm asking you to join President Obama and pledge your
support for his proposed budget priorities supporting the American people by making us
energy independent, making health care more affordable by reducing costs, and by improving
education in America.

We will deliver these pledges from individuals in your community to the President and your
members of Congress in order to show the overwhelming support for President Obama's plan
and the urgent need to move this country forward.

Now is the time for leadership that will put our country back on the path to prosperity. Our
country's success depends on folks like you showing your support by joining the President in
strengthening our economy and our country.

WILL YOU SIGN THE PLEDGE?

QUESTIONS/ISSUES:
If you are asked questions about President Obama’s economic plan or for more information,
please refer to the talking points below:

ENERGY:
• The energy challenges our country faces are severe and have gone unaddressed for far
too long.
• Our addiction to foreign oil doesn't just undermine our national security and wreak havoc
on our environment — it cripples our economy and strains the budgets of working
families all across America.
• Creating a new energy economy isn’t just a challenge to meet, it’s also an opportunity to
create new businesses, new industries, and millions of new jobs – jobs that pay well and
cannot be outsourced.
• The President will make historic investments that will double the nation’s supply of
renewable energy in the next three years; spur new discoveries in energy, medicine,
science and technology through the largest infusion of basic research funding in American
history; and put Americans back to work modernizing buildings and weatherizing homes.

HEALTH CARE:• The skyrocketing cost of health care — costs that are straining family budgets, crippling
businesses and consuming government budgets – is one of the greatest threats to
America’s fiscal health.
• In the last eight years, health care premiums have grown four times faster than wages,
and an additional nine million Americans have become uninsured. The cost of health
care now causes a bankruptcy in America every thirty seconds.
• Even for people with health care, all it takes is one stroke of bad luck to become one of
the nearly 46 million uninsured — or the millions who have health care, but can’t afford it.
• Health care reform is no longer just a moral imperative, it is a fiscal imperative. If we
want to create jobs and rebuild our economy, then we must address the crushing cost of
health care this year.

EDUCATION:
• Our education policies will help determine whether our children have the chance to
fulfill their potential and whether our workers have the chance to build a better life for
their families.
• Education has always been the foundation for achieving the American dream, providing
opportunity to millions of American families, newcomers, and immigrants.
• Our nation’s economic competitiveness depends on providing every child with an
education that will enable them to compete in a global economy that is predicated on
knowledge and innovation.
• We cannot let other countries outperform us in education if America is to remain a
global economic leader in the 21st Century

HOW DOES THE PRESIDENT'S BUDGET PLAN CREATE JOBS AND IMPROVE THE ECONOMY?
The first order of business for President Obama is to get our economy moving again, create jobs
and lay the foundation for growth in the short and long term. The President is committed to
bringing the type of change we need to the economy and to our national priorities that gets us
out of the boom and bust economic cycles we have seen over the last two decades and instead
provides for steady long term growth that we can count on. The future of our economy and job
creation is tied to our ability to improve education, make health care more affordable and invest
in renewable energy to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil - all priorities of the
President's budget plan.

WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT THESE AIG BONUSES?
It is AIG’s own recklessness and greed that put the company in trouble in the first place and the
President shares the outrage of the country and the taxpayers over these bonuses. The President
has directed the Treasury Department to use the taxpayer's investment in AIG as leverage and
pursue every legal avenue available to block these bonuses. The President is doing everything
possible to get to the bottom of this and protect American taxpayers from this outrage.

HOW DOES THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN ADDRESS THE GROWING BUDGET DEFICIT?
The President believes that after we emerge from the current economic crisis which is gripping
the country, that we must get our fiscal house in order. His budget plan cuts wasteful spending,
eliminates unnecessary programs and allows tax breaks for the wealthiest of Americans and
corporations to expire in 2011. By making the needed investments to get our economy moving
again, and by making the hard choices in these other areas, President Obama's plan will cut the
current projected budget deficit in half by the end of his first term in office.
